Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the ESGO Council, the Scientific Committee, and the Local Organising Committee, it is our great pleasure to invite you to join the 23rd Congress of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO 2022), which will be held from October 27-30, 2022, in Berlin, Germany.

The year 2022 marks a significant milestone in ESGO’s history, the transition in the format and timing of its flagship event, moving from a Biennial to an Annual Congress for the first time, since 1983.

For almost 40 years, ESGO has hosted a biennial meeting on odd-numbered years for its members and the international gynaecological oncology community at large, attracting a growing number of international attendees from around the world to share best clinical practices and research discoveries that will shape the future of our field and raise the standards of care.

As ESGO returns to Berlin to celebrate its 23rd Congress, we hope the 2022 meeting will be physical, and preparations are already in progress. We are considering all scenarios while our focus is on an in-person experience with all the attributes of the ESGO gathering.

The Congress in 2022 builds on the success of the ESGO 2021 Hybrid Meeting and the in-person events at ESGO 2019 in Athens, Greece and ESGO 2017 in Vienna, Austria, each attracting over 3,000 participants from more than 90 countries.

Following the tradition of previous meetings, a great deal of thought went into formulating a stimulating scientific programme prepared for you by our Scientific Programme Committee and Council, offering the opportunity to meet with colleagues, learn about new developments in Gynaecological Oncology, and experience the wonderful hospitality and scenery of Berlin.

This year’s programme will highlight the recent developments in the management of gynaecological cancer patients delivered by a specially selected line-up of world experts.

Topics will include the newest aspects in (molecular) diagnostics, surgical, radiotherapeutic and medical concepts, as well as tailored strategies at the time of diagnosis and recurrent disease.

Surgical approaches have been subjected to changes and individualisation, based on both tumour characteristics and patients’ needs.

Improved knowledge about tumour biology and the implementation of new biomarkers has led to new trends of personalised medicine and the selection of patients for individualised treatment.

A special programme will be designed for young clinicians by ENYGO, the European Network of Young Gynae Oncologists, including a unique variety of hands-on workshops.

In addition, Patient organisations will be well represented with a two-day patient seminar programme by ENGAGe, European Network of Gynaecological Cancer Advocacy Groups.

The European Network of Gynaecological Oncological Trial groups (ENGOT) was initiated in 2007 during the ESGO Berlin congress and will celebrate its 15th anniversary in Berlin at ESGO 2022!

Representatives of ENGOT will be actively involved in the congress and present exclusive updates on ENGOT trials and new emerging pathways and targeted treatments in gynaecological cancers.

When enjoying the opportunities to learn and network at ESGO 2022, you will also have the chance to explore Berlin, an ever-evolving city with a vibrant culture, alive with history and cutting-edge architecture from palaces and museums through to modern sites. One of the city’s iconic landmarks is the Brandenburg Gate, once a symbol of a divided nation and now a symbol of unity and peace. Berlin’s must-see attractions encompass the Reichstag building with the famous glass dome, the seat of the German parliament, the city's TV Tower and UNESCO World Heritage sites that include, the palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin, Museum Island with its ensemble of five magnificent buildings, and the Berlin Modernism Housing Estates.

Berlin was home to the pioneering physician, pathologist, researcher, and politician Rudolf Virchow, one of the historical giants who shaped much of our modern understanding of diseases. His personal collection of pathology specimens is part of the exhibition at the Berlin Museum of Medical History at the Charité and is considered number one of its kind in the world.

We look forward to welcoming you to the ESGO 2022 Congress, Europe’s landmark meeting on Gynaecological Oncology, for an inspiring and joyful experience to advance our field a step further.
